Coming Back After Failure - Min. Harrell L. Henton
Every life of faith includes moments we wish we could undo—times when we spoke too quickly, chose poorly, or shrank back when we should have stood firm. Failure can leave us feeling distant from God, weighed down by guilt, and unsure of how to begin again. Yet Scripture consistently reminds us that failure is never the final word—God’s grace is.
Consider Peter the Apostle. Full of confidence, he once declared he would never deny Jesus. But in a moment of fear, he did just that—three times. Still, after the resurrection, Jesus sought him out and gently restored him (John 21), giving Peter not rejection, but renewed purpose. His failure did not define him; God’s mercy did.
Or reflect on King David. His sin was serious and its consequences real, yet his response is preserved for us in Psalm 51. David did not hide or excuse himself—he turned back to God with a humble and honest heart: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” In that prayer, we see that restoration begins with returning.
Failure often whispers that we should stay away from God until we have “fixed” ourselves. But the truth is the opposite—God is the one who restores. He calls us not to run from Him, but to come back, just as we are, trusting in His mercy.
When we fail:
The message of the gospel is not that we never fall, but that in Christ we are never beyond restoration. God’s grace is greater than our worst moments, and His faithfulness is stronger than our failures.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)
Today, if your heart feels heavy from failure, hear this invitation clearly: return to God. His mercy has not run out, and your story is not finished.
